Visit the Naval Air Station Aviation Museum
Less than 15-minutes from the Days Inn & Suites Wildwood, a world of military history and technology awaits you at the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum. Located inside the station’s historic Hangar #1, the museum features an extensive collection of historic aircraft and military memorabilia. They offer variety of interactive activities and exhibits for military history buffs of all ages.
The hangar that the museum calls home originally served as a dive-bomber training facility during the Second World War, and it is this period that the museum focuses on most heavily. In the “1940s Room” visitors are transported back to a bygone era with original artifacts and memorabilia. Similarly, in the Radio Room and the Coast Guard area, visitors will feel as though they have entered a time warp the WWII era!
Museum goers can look forward to sitting in the cockpit of a historic aircraft, climbing a real air traffic control tower and learning about the science of flight through a special interactive exhibit.
26 planes and helicopters make up the museum’s fleet, including an F-14 Tomcat, T-33 Shooting Star, MiG-15, F-16 Fighting Falcom, A-4 Skyhawk and more. There’s even a full-size replica of a German V-2 rocket! Those with a penchant for aircraft engines, too, will have much to hold their interest, as the museum feature a variety of old aircraft engine—true marvels of engineering in their day!
At the multimedia “All Available Boats” exhibit, you can learn about our coast guard’s heroic response to the events of 9/11, when they helped evacuate more than 300,000 people from danger.
And if looking at all those aircraft has you thinking you could be a pilot, hop in the cockpit at the flight simulator and go for a spin!
